There has been a tremendous evolution in the technique of facelift with our better understanding of facial anatomy.

Under the skin there are partitioning layers called fascia. The superficial fascia of the face is called the “SMAS”. You may have read about it in magazine articles. This layer supports the skin and the fat and progressively glides on the deep fascia over the years because of gravity. The modern facelift as Dr Larocque performs it is a multiple layer, component procedure using the SMAS as the handle to lift the cheek. This means much of the work is done in the deeper structures to lift, reshape and contour your face and make it look naturally youthful and rested. The skin is not pulled under unnatural tension so you don’t look stretched and the surgeon has a better control on the appearance of the scars. A facelift can be done alone or in conjunction with other procedures.

If you are considering a facelift, the information provided will give you a basic understanding of the procedure, but it cannot answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a good candidate for the surgery?

The best candidates for a facelift are men and women who are looking for an improvement in their appearance and have realistic expectations. A facelift can make you look younger and fresher and may enhance you self-esteem but it won’t give you a totally different look, nor can it restore the health and vitality of your youth. You must do the surgery for yourself and not for others and be ready for a recovery period of a few weeks if you want a long-lasting result.

What should I expect from my consultation?

During the consultation, you will be asked about your expectations and Dr Larocque will explain what can be accomplished by the surgery. His goal is to obtain a natural, harmonious result that will last many years. During the physical examination, your facial bone structure, underlying skin structure, skin thickness, texture and elasticity will be assessed. Dr Larocque will evaluate your medical history and any medical conditions that can affect the outcome of the procedure. You will meet with the patient coordinator to discuss surgery fees and scheduling dates.

How is the surgery performed?

The surgery can be done under general anesthesia but is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation. The medication will keep you sleepy and your face will be completely insensitive to pain. The recovery is usually faster with less bruising and swelling. You have a surgical dressing for a few days to protect the incisions. Stitches are removed after usually 10 days. Most patients return to work after 2 or 3 weeks. Specific instructions will be given to ensure a good recovery. You will be able to join Dr Larocque for any concern after the surgery.

Are all the facelift techniques the same?

Facelift by different surgeons are very different. Plastic surgery is art and science. All plastic surgeons have learned the science. Art makes the difference. Like paintings in any museum are different based on the style and the skill of the artist, the same is true of facelifts. Every surgeon does it differently, and even the same surgeon should do different sculpting sequences in different faces. It’s all art. It is then important to ask questions and make sure your surgeon understands your needs. It is also important to see pictures of postoperative results to see if they correspond to your aesthetic philosophy.

Is the result long-lasting?

Modern facelift lasts longer than in the past. Your facelift may “turn the clock back” but not stop it. Your face will continue to age with time but in another sense, the effects of your facelift are lasting. Years later, you will continue to look better than if you have never had a facelift.
